Thomas Röwekamp, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Defence Committee, has criticized Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) for the handling of rules pertaining to the obligation for service members to deregister when traveling abroad, and he is demanding consequences. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Röwekamp described the situation as “extremely annoying” and noted that it detracts from the goal of encouraging young people to sign up for military service. The committee chairman urged Pistorius to personally ensure that the legal ambiguity is resolved immediately. Röwekamp also stressed that if a new legislative adjustment is required, he expects an appropriate proposal to be submitted immediately. He concluded by noting that this ongoing debate is causing substantial damage.
