Grüne Call for More Safeguards Amid Concerns Over Bundestag Integrity and Democratic Threats

Following the debate concerning the Green party member Ferat Kocak, Green parliamentary affairs expert Konstantin von Notz has called for additional security measures to better protect the work of the Bundestag (German Federal Parliament). Von Notz told the Rheinische Post (Friday edition) that if elections consistently bring in “increasingly radical individuals with problematic networks and ideological inclinations” into parliaments, “it would undoubtedly be a great challenge to ensure the integrity of parliamentary work and necessary confidentiality.” He emphasized that this concern extends far beyond the committees and bodies of the German Bundestag, a point highlighted by all discussions held in recent weeks. According to von Notz, the country is currently in a critical phase when the democratic legal order faces a severe internal threat. While adjustments have already been made, such as regarding access restrictions, he stated clearly that further security mechanisms are required-and not merely within parliamentary settings. He concluded by asserting that the resilience of democracy must be proven overall in the current climate.
