Germany’s Bid for UN Security Council Seat Rallies Optimism Amidst Tough Global Contest

Jürgen Hardt, a foreign policy expert with the CDU, expressed optimism ahead of the upcoming vote on Germany’s candidacy for the UN Security Council. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition), he asserted that Germany strongly supports the United Nations and the broader international order, a commitment he believes will be internationally recognized.

This support from numerous nations worldwide backs the German application, despite the strong competition posed by Austria, which benefits from Vienna hosting several UN organizations. Hardt nonetheless expressed his hope that the German bid will ultimately succeed.

The UN General Assembly in New York is scheduled to decide on the new non-permanent members of the Security Council for the 2027/2028 term this Wednesday. Germany is competing in a group alongside Portugal and Austria, though only two seats are available for allocation.
