Schnieder Considers Fuel Subsidy Extension Amid Price and Geopolitical Uncertainty

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) stated that the government is not ruling out the extension of the fuel discount, which is scheduled to expire at the end of June. Speaking to RTL and ntv, the minister indicated that the decision hinges critically on several factors. They will be closely monitoring how prices are developing, how the existing discount is being passed down to consumers, and the evolving situation in the Middle East. Only after this analysis can the federal government determine its next steps.

“Then we will have to consider carefully: how can we react?” Schnieder said. Whether the discount will be extended or if other measures are necessary cannot be answered today, as a decision must be made in the coming weeks.

At the same time, Schnieder advocated for relief measures that are as targeted as possible, particularly for the logistics industry. He stressed that examining the needs of the logistics sector is vital for finding effective solutions. He added that these targeted approaches ultimately benefit all consumers, as rising transport costs are passed directly on to higher prices for goods and groceries.
