Facing steadily rising oil prices, the Green party members of the federal government have criticized the ruling coalition for abandoning citizens amidst the high fuel costs. Andreas Audretsch, the Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader, told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that oil corporations are currently doubling, tripling, or even quintupling their profits-all at the expense of everyone who has to pay at the pump. He stressed the urgent need for Germany to implement a windfall tax.
The price curve for oil has started trending upward again. On Wednesday, a barrel of Nord Sea Brent crude, weighing 159 liters, cost more than 100 US dollars for the first time since July 24, equating to approximately 86 euros.
Audretsch also strongly criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), accusing him of simply refusing to offer a solution or suggestion, thereby leaving the public unsupported. Furthermore, the Green politician criticized Energy Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU), arguing that she prefers aligning herself with large American oil and gas conglomerates rather than holding these corporations accountable.
Audretsch stated that this approach continues to drive Germany deeper into dependence on foreign fossil fuel imports. He insisted that Germany must achieve independence from volatile pump prices, proposing that a transition to e-mobility accompanied by affordable, German-made electric cars is necessary for this goal.
