German Customs has achieved a major victory against international drug trafficking in Wilhelmshaven. Authorities announced on Wednesday that more than eight tons of cocaine were seized at the Jade-Weser-Port in February. Due to operational security reasons, these details could only be released now.
The cocaine, which had an estimated street value of 500 million euros, was discovered inside a container sourced from West Africa that was officially intended to contain cocoa beans. The control was initiated following a pre-existing risk analysis. Instead of cocoa beans, officials ultimately found over 400 packages of cocaine, with approximately 20 pressed cocaine blocks in each package. This marks one of the largest individual seizures recorded by Germany in recent years.
The investigation was jointly conducted by the Customs Investigation Office Hanover and Spanish authorities. In Spain, two individuals suspected of organizing the smuggling were apprehended on May 14. One of the arrested suspects is the managing director of an import company and is reportedly linked to a previous cocaine delivery. Both detained suspects face multi-year prison sentences in Spain.
According to State Prosecutor Jan Wilken, the illegal cargo was destroyed in Germany under extensive security precautions before the container was transported further to Barcelona. This action successfully prevented criminals from potentially recovering the seized cocaine at a later date through violence.
Tino Igelmann, the head of the Customs Criminal Police, added that the seizure of eight tons of cocaine, followed by the subsequent investigation success, once again demonstrates the strong capabilities of German Customs. He credited the effective risk management system and the close cooperation between control and investigation departments within Customs for playing a significant role.
