The German professional associations overseeing firefighting services aim to intensify their collaboration, striving for a broader strategic partnership between them. This was announced by the German Fire Association (DFV) on Saturday. The leadership from several key organizations-the Union for the Promotion of German Fire Protection (vfdb), the DFV itself, the Working Group of Professional Fire Brigade Chiefs (AGBF), and the Federation of Operational Fire Brigades in Germany (WFVD)-agreed that future challenges can only be managed through “close cooperation and coordinated action.”
The provision of public safety across Germany is facing “fundamental changes.” The associations cite significant difficulties confronting fire departments, including the impacts of climate change, increasing instances of extreme weather events, shifts in the geopolitical security landscape, declining numbers of volunteers, and insufficient financial resources. Nearly every municipality in Germany, according to the unions, is affected by these issues. The planned partnership intends to help the firefighting service advocate for its interests more effectively.
The desired cooperation aims at an “evolution of structures,” optimizing resources, and ensuring regular professional and organizational exchange among the member associations. The initial step involves developing a comprehensive strategy. The associations recognize their responsibility to establish proactive measures that guarantee the safety of people in Germany reliably into the future. According to DFV President Karl-Heinz Banse, this strategic cooperation means bringing them closer “for the benefit of the population of Germany.”
