The opening of the new Stuttgart Central Station, part of the Stuttgart 21 project, is reportedly being pushed back until the end of 2031. According to reports from the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, citing people familiar with the project, the delays are attributed to “drastic failures” by the responsible Deutsche Bahn project company. Furthermore, the Green-Black state government of Baden-Württemberg also anticipates that an opening before 2031 is highly unlikely.
Deutsche Bahn is now planning a staggered commissioning process, which is expected to provide initial relief to passengers by the end of 2027. Initially, the station was slated to open in 2025, before that date was postponed again to 2026. Various politicians across different parties have repeatedly stated that they only support the commissioning if the rail traffic is reliable and punctual. However, Deutsche Bahn has cautioned against the severe financial consequences that a further postponement would entail.
Stuttgart 21 stands as one of Germany’s most controversial infrastructure projects. Its costs have dramatically increased from the initial estimate of around 2.5 billion euros to over eleven billion euros. The project has been repeatedly hampered by construction issues, legal challenges, planning modifications, and rising costs, causing the timetable to constantly waver and leading to multiple postponements of its opening.
