Berlin CDU leading candidate Stefan Evers categorically rejected any possibility of cooperation with The Left (Die Linke). Speaking on the POLITICO Berlin Playbook podcast, Evers stated, “Here in Berlin we are dealing with an extreme, a radicalized left. Collaboration under no circumstances is conceivable.”
With the election for the Berlin House of Representatives approaching on September 20th, Evers has made the clear separation from the AfD and The Left a central theme of his campaign. The CDU politician remarked, “In Berlin, the question is whether a radical left-wing party or the CDU will win.”
Evers also characterized the AfD’s success in Saxony-Anhalt as a “historic turning point.” He warned that “if a securely right-extremist party suddenly becomes the strongest force in a state parliament by such a margin, it will certainly not go without consequences.” In his view, the massive losses incurred by the CDU necessitate that all democratic parties examine the situation closely. “We must ask how such a success was possible,” he added.
Evers did not comment on potential repercussions for the CDU’s leading candidate in Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze. He stated, “The colleagues in Saxony-Anhalt are not necessarily waiting for advice from Berlin.” Current figures suggest that “the AfD may possess its own majority together with the BSW.”
For the capital, Evers presented a clear mandate: “I will do everything to keep extremists from power here in Berlin.” He asserted that Berlin must “clearly and decisively distance itself from all political extremes.”
