Global Anti-Doping Code 2027 Ushering In Era of Enhanced Investigations and Human Rights Focus

The German National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) focused on the new World Anti-Doping Code 2027 during its annual press conference on Tuesday. The code, which was approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in December 2025 following a three-year consultation period, is set to become effective on January 1, 2027.

Lars Mortsiefer, Chairman and Chief Legal Officer of NADA, stated that the code establishes “the foundation for harmonizing international anti-doping efforts.” He emphasized that a special focus has been placed on upholding human rights, particularly concerning minors and other vulnerable individuals. Furthermore, the responsibilities of anti-doping organizations will be expanded. Mortsiefer clarified that national anti-doping organizations will assume the sole jurisdiction for doping control measures, as well as the result management and disciplinary procedures at the national level.

The area of “Intelligence and Investigations” will also be strengthened and will receive an international standard for the first time. Mortsiefer announced that NADA was a key contributor to this development, committing itself to the future of anti-doping investigations. He noted that successes are already being achieved through this work in collaboration with other anti-doping sectors, demonstrating its forward-looking nature.

Regarding the implementation process, Mortsiefer stated that NADA will work with the relevant sports associations in 2026 to implement the revised code, while simultaneously maintaining dialogue with international partners. The NADA chief stressed that this cooperation is essential for harmonizing anti-doping measures and ensuring the successful pursuit of clean sport.
