According to information provided by the dts news agency on Friday, discussions within Berlin government circles indicate that the federal government currently views Ukraine’s military situation as placing it in a “new position of strength.” This strength, they believe, could gradually “open a window for diplomacy.” Government officials are currently engaging in permanent conversations with their European partners regarding this matter. However, sources reported that there is currently “no serious answer” as to who will represent Europe in potential negotiations with Russia.
Potential talks with Russia are also set to be subjects of discussion at both the G7 summit in France at the beginning of next week, and at the EU Council on Thursday and Friday. Within Berlin, there is a strong emphasis on gauging the level of cooperation with the United States. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is scheduled to be personally present at both high-level gatherings.
Furthermore, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) plans to advocate in Brussels next week for a closer partnership for Ukraine, envisioning a form of “associated membership.” This same push for deeper integration is being made for the Republic of Moldova and the countries of the Western Balkans. Government circles in Berlin currently observe a “positive expansion momentum” in these areas.
