Around a thousand people participated in a demonstration in Berlin on Friday, following a call by the IG Metall union to advocate for the future of Germany’s steel industry. The procession began at the Brandenburg Gate and continued moving towards the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. The slogan used during the event was “Steel has a future – with us.”
The steel industry in Germany is currently facing significant pressure from multiple angles. On one hand, the weakness of several key industrial sectors contributes to the challenge. On the other, the steel sector is concerned about the low-priced imports, particularly those originating from China. Furthermore, the high tariffs imposed by the United States are also seen as a major issue by the industry.
Prior to the demonstration, Jürgen Kerner, Second Chairman of IG Metall, acknowledged that politicians have taken some steps for the steel industry in recent months. However, he stressed that they must not “stop halfway” and are obligated to fulfill their promises.
