Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has sounded the alarm regarding the growing threat of possible drone attacks on the German Bundestag and the buildings of other constitutional bodies. In a letter to Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU), which the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition) reported, Dobrindt noted that the increasing number of drone sightings in recent months has heightened the alert level of security agencies.
The minister emphasized the critical nature of protecting constitutional institutions against abstract dangers, stating that “a constant drone defense capability is necessary” to safeguard the properties of the federal constitutional bodies.
This concerns the implementation of police defense. Although Klöckner had previously inquired about utilizing the Federal Police’s new drone defense unit for parliamentary security, Dobrindt clarified that this assistance could only be provided “temporarily.” He also pointed out that the “original jurisdiction” for protection ultimately lies with the Berlin State Police.
As a result, the Bundestag administration has since written to Berlin Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) to clarify the responsibilities. According to the letter from the Bundestag director, Paul Göttke (CDU), it is now “of particular importance to implement the necessary joint steps for effective drone defense as quickly as possible.” It has also been reported that initial discussions regarding the practical implementation of these measures have already taken place.
