Hendrik Streeck, the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Drugs and Addiction (CDU), has called for tougher measures against illegal gambling across Germany. Speaking to “Bild am Sonntag”, Streeck stated that in his view, there needs to be greater nationwide control, noting, “We are seeing a massive development here. This issue only truly comes into visibility when we actively look at it.”
He explained that the social consequences of illegal betting practices for those involved are significant. Streeck warned that the activity pushes people who are already in vulnerable circumstances toward ruin and despair, turning what might be perceived as a way out into a deceptive trap.
To combat this, Streeck is advocating for stricter penalties against those who run illegal operations. He believes the punishments for anyone commercially involved in illegal gambling must be increased. Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of improving cooperation between various authorities. Streeck suggested that agencies need to be able to exchange data more easily, adding, “Phone surveillance of suspects should also be made possible.”
