Schwesig Demands Stronger Fuel Price Cap, Pushing for Major Energy Cost Reform

Manuela Schwesig, the Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has called on Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Economic Minister Katherina Reiche (both members of the CDU) to take action to reduce energy prices and improve the draft for a fuel price cap. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Schwesig criticized the current proposal, stating that “what is currently available is too weak.” She expressed the concern that the existing plan appears designed primarily to prevent the fuel price cap from being enacted. Instead, she demanded an effective fuel price cap that provides permanent relief, comparing it to the system used in Luxembourg. Furthermore, she added that the high costs of fuel and energy not only negatively impact citizens but also restrain the German economy. Therefore, she concluded that it should be in the interest of both the Federal Chancellor and the Federal Economic Minister to achieve lower energy prices for Germany.
