FDP defense politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has cautioned against excessive optimism regarding reports of a peace agreement between the US and Iran, noting contradictory information surrounding the potential deal. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she stated that the U.S. President has frequently announced various agreements that have ultimately failed to generate serious movement, leading her to question whether the White House even possesses a concrete plan.
Regardless of the terms of a possible accord, she stressed the necessity of acknowledging the other party at the negotiating table. Strack-Zimmermann described the Iranian leadership in sharp terms, referring to them as “the criminal mullahs who have brought misery upon their own people and other nations since 1979.”
The FDP politician also highlighted Tehran’s broader regional influence. She pointed out that Iran has not merely unchecked its proxies in the Middle East; the Houthi movement in Yemen, Hezbollah, and Hamas have contributed to the Russian war in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Strack-Zimmermann noted the regime’s activities within Europe, citing instances where the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has targeted exiled Iranians who are critical of the government. She concluded that any agreement can only be sustainable if Iran is continuously contained and prevented from developing an atomic bomb. “Otherwise, the entire world would become a hostage to it,” she stated.
