Daniel Peters, the leading candidate for the CDU in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state elections, has urged the federal government not to let the fuel discount expire without a replacement in late June. Speaking to the “Welt”, Peters stated that he considers it irresponsible if gasoline prices increase by 20 cents at the start of the holiday period without any other form of relief, noting that high fuel costs have placed an enormous burden on citizens.
Therefore, Peters suggested that the federal government should suspend the CO2 levy starting July 1st in order to lower energy and fuel prices. Looking ahead to the period after the state election in September, Peters advocated for forming a minority government should a majority prove impossible in the Schwerin State Parliament without the support of the Left Party or the AfD.
Peters pointed out that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is geographically close to Scandinavia, where minority governments have been utilized routinely for years. While admitting that this is not his preferred model-stable coalitions are generally more reliable, in his view-he stressed the need for greater parliamentary pragmatism in Germany.
