CDU Leader Refutes AfD Proximity Allegations, Highlights Cross-Party Debate Dilemma

Guido Heuer, the chairman of the CDU parliamentary faction in Saxony-Anhalt, has decisively dismissed allegations of cronyism with AfD top candidate Ulrich Siegmund. Heuer told the publication “Stern” that videos and photos taken at an election forum created a “completely false impression.” He noted that Siegmund repeatedly spread falsehoods during the forum, and he had intervened in that moment by speaking into the microphone.

Although Heuer conceded that the situation could be “misinterpreted,” he argued that the focus on a simple photograph, rather than crucial topics like deregulation or securing skilled labor, demonstrates a failure in the broader public debate. He insisted that efforts were being made to “artificially inflate” the situation to suggest a closeness between him and Siegmund, adding, “The fact is, I will not be cornered.”

The CDU politician described the approach to the AfD as a “dilemma.” While the AfD is categorized as securely right-extremist in Saxony-Anhalt, it remains a democratically legitimate party in parliament. Heuer stated that this means the necessary approach is to challenge the AfD on substantive issues and fight it as a political opponent, all while strictly adhering to parliamentary rules.

According to Heuer, it does not matter who supports motions to ensure a majority in parliament. He contended that “what is substantively correct cannot become wrong simply because the ‘wrong’ people agree to it.” He concluded by stating that when the CDU introduces its positions into the state parliament, all factions are welcome to support them.
