CDU foreign policy expert Armin Laschet critically assessed the recent agreement with Iran, stating to the news magazine Politico that it is by no means a major success. He noted that several fundamental objectives remain unmet. Specifically, the regime change did not occur, and there is no satisfactory solution for the Iranian missile program. While he acknowledged the positive outcome that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, he pointed out that this was already the case before the conflict started.
Laschet stressed that Western nations should not cease their criticism of the regime in Tehran. “We must continue to urge Iran to release political prisoners, end the executions, and stop supporting proxies,” he declared.
Regarding the potential deployment of German mine-hunting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Laschet expressed general openness. However, he stipulated that this would be contingent upon a peace agreement and the necessary mandate from the German Bundestag. “In that case,” he added, “German mine-hunting vessels could be part of the mission.”
