The presiding member of the Interior Ministers Conference, Hamburg’s Senator of the Interior Andy Grote (SPD), has refused to accept a new petition that has been collected by a police union calling for a nationwide fireworks ban. The Police Union in Berlin announced on Tuesday that they received this rejection. Grote’s reason for declining the petition was that it is “substantively identical” to the one submitted last year. Earlier, in December 2025, approximately two million signatures were symbolically presented in support of a fireworks ban; however, the latest petition reportedly contains 3.3 million signatures. In response, the union urged the public to mention Senator Grote in comments on Instagram and campaign for the ban, stating: “Please increase the pressure with us.”
