The federal government has responded cautiously to the significant setback suffered by Republicans in the US midterm elections. On Wednesday, Deputy Government Spokesperson Steffen Meyer told the dts news agency that it was currently too early to speculate on the full implications of the results. However, he confirmed that the government has its own interests which it will continue to present within the transatlantic relationship. “Stable international order, rules-based trade, a strong NATO-these themes shape our exchange, have shaped it in the past, and will certainly continue to shape our future cooperation.”
Meyer stated that generally, the government does not comment on, interpret, or evaluate electoral results in other countries. Nevertheless, he stressed that the United States remains a crucial partner and ally to Germany, and continues to be so. The collaboration with the US will proceed, even if it leads to a different political configuration in the two chambers of Congress.
