The United States and Iran have signed an intent declaration aimed at ending the conflict between the two nations. US President Donald Trump affixed his signature at the Palace of Versailles after the conclusion of the G7 summit, while Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian digitally signed the document. Pakistan subsequently announced that the agreement would take immediate effect, leading to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The signing took place earlier than originally scheduled; a ceremony had initially been intended for Switzerland. Trump confirmed the signature following a dinner at the Palace of Versailles, an event to which he had been invited by French President Emmanuel Macron. Despite the signing, several critical issues remain unresolved, particularly those pertaining to Iran’s nuclear program.
Reports indicate that the agreement stipulates an immediate cessation of hostilities and establishes a 60-day negotiation period for a final settlement. The US commits to lifting sanctions against Iran and releasing frozen assets. Furthermore, the US pledged $300 billion in development assistance to Iran. In return, Iran is expected to normalize shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the ultimate arrangement for Iran’s nuclear program remains undecided.
