Greens Warn Against EU ‘Return Hubs,’ Labeling Planned Deportation System ‘Trump-Like’

Filiz Polat, the Green Party Parliamentary Secretary in the Bundestag, strongly criticized the European Union’s planned establishment of so-called “Return Hubs” for refugees. She stated to the “Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Saturday edition) that Interior Minister Dobrindt is driving this new regulation, pushing the EU toward a deportation system resembling that of Trump.

Polat also highlighted that the World Refugee Day in 2026 is overshadowed by the tightening of asylum laws under the GEAS reform. She criticized the decision made by the European Parliament this week, which was supported by Christian Democrats, the Right, and far-right parties, to allow the incarceration of families with children in camps outside European jurisdiction. Furthermore, she noted that people would be sent to states with which they have absolutely no connection.

According to Polat, this harsh deportation course exclusively benefits right-wing extremist parties. Rather than continuing to erode the fundamental rights of those in need of protection, she argued that there is a greater need for enhanced integration measures and true perspectives for individuals who have long become part of German and European society.
