Right-wing politician Abelardo de la Espriella has narrowly won the presidential election in Colombia. Following the counting of nearly all votes, he secured 49.7 percent of the vote in the run-off against Senator Iván Cepeda, who garnered 48.7 percent.
Supported by former US President Donald Trump, De la Espriella has announced plans to tackle illegal armed groups, drug trafficking, and crime through decisive military action. This election marks a dramatic shift in Colombian politics, as De la Espriella intends to terminate all negotiations with illegal armed groups in favor of a tougher military strategy. His agenda includes building large-scale correctional facilities and intensifying cooperation with the United States. Many supporters celebrated his victory by wearing Colombian football jerseys and “Make Colombia Great Again” hats.
Meanwhile, Cepeda has yet to acknowledge his defeat. Gustavo Petro, an ally of Cepeda, voiced concerns regarding potential irregularities in the election and demanded a review of the electoral infrastructure. Given that Petro is the first left-leaning head of state in Colombia’s history, he was ineligible to run again due to existing term limits. The escalating tensions between the two political factions could potentially lead to unrest across the country.
