JU Demands Cabinet Action on Pension Reform Ahead of Summer Break

The Young Union (JU) has urged the federal government to decide on the key principles of pension reform within the cabinet before the summer recess. The message came via a letter from the CDU politician to the members of the Young Union, as reported by the magazine Focus.

“The commission recommendations are here. Now the reform must happen,” wrote JU leader Johannes Winkel in the email. “No patchwork, no picky selection, no à la carte system-but a rapid implementation of the overall package, which only works as a whole. Binding key principles must be decided within the cabinet before the start of the summer break.” The CDU politician concluded his message with the directive: “Just do it, dear federal government.” The parliamentary summer break officially begins after July 10th.

Winkel also reminded the government of a promise made last year: that a comprehensive pension reform would take place this year, based on the commission’s recommendations for restructuring the entire old-age provision system. He noted that the pension commission presented its unanimous report, opening up the chance for the largest pension reform in decades.

Meanwhile, CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann views the recommendations from the pension commission as an opportunity for a “real breakthrough” in pension policy. Speaking to the newspapers of the Funke media group, Linnemann stated, “With the commission’s proposals, we have a great chance to break through a reform bottleneck that has existed for decades. This has the potential for a real breakthrough in pension policy.” Linnemann stressed that “we now must implement this reform package quickly.”
