Merz Campaigns for Pension Reform in Bundestag: Stabilizing Germany’s Retirement Future

Following the presentation of the pension commission’s final report, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) made an appeal in the Bundestag for support for the proposed reforms. During a ministerial questioning session on Wednesday, Merz stated, “The results of this commission include truly far-reaching reform proposals aimed at the permanent stabilization of our old-age security systems.” He emphasized that implementing these reforms entirely would lead to a lasting stabilization of retirement incomes and establish a new overall standard of provision. He described the plan as a “major step” that should be agreed upon and passed jointly by the Bundestag before the end of the year. Merz called on members of parliament to engage “constructively” in the discussions, facilitating a shared success. The ultimate goals are to permanently stabilize Germany’s pension provision while also opening new opportunities through the capital market.
