E5 Nations Pledge Unified Defense Boost and Strong Ukraine Support Ahead of NATO Summit

The heads of state and government of the so-called E5 group demonstrated a strong sense of unity at a meeting held in Berlin. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) reiterated the commitment to significantly increase defense spending. This sentiment is shared by the other E5 countries-France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland-all of which intend to invest more heavily in their defense capabilities.

The primary goals of this increased investment are to forge a more balanced transatlantic partnership and to strengthen the European component within NATO.

Furthermore, the E5 nations plan to send a clear signal of support for Ukraine while in Ankara. Merz emphasized the demand for a strong financial commitment to Kiev, acknowledging its status as a European NATO ally. The German Chancellor added that transatlantic unity has been exceptionally strong lately, hoping that Moscow will take “lessons” from this solidarity.

Finally, the leaders welcomed the framework agreement between the United States and Iran, which is scheduled to be negotiated in Switzerland.
