German Minister Warns Against Cuts to Development Aid, Stressing Global Responsibility

Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (SPD) issued a stern warning against further reductions in development aid, asserting that Germany must safeguard its influence on the world stage. According to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the SPD politician stated that the future of Germany is intrinsically linked to how seriously and extensively the country prioritizes its partnerships with the Global South. She stressed that the path forward lies in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, arguing that if Germany wants to remain a crucial player among the world’s largest exporters, it cannot diminish its role.

The Minister acknowledged that her ministry is approaching its fifth consecutive budget cut. In response, Radovan emphasized that the focus of the development cooperation must be strengthened, warning emphatically that Germany cannot withdraw its support at this critical juncture. However, she admitted that some specific projects are no longer financially viable, citing aid related to the Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar as an example of projects that may cease.

Nevertheless, she fiercely criticized the trend of abruptly halting aid, contrasting it with the actions of the United States. “What we will not do is stop providing assistance suddenly,” she said, referencing the US approach. Radovan argued that such sudden withdrawals lead to escalating conflicts and crises. In her view, the American retreat has not only failed to contribute to problem-solving but has actively exacerbated existing challenges.
