Morocco secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, ultimately succeeding in a penalty shootout. The match was deadlocked at 1-1 after the traditional playing time, and no further goals were scored during the extra period.
Initially, the Dutch team held a slight advantage, controlling more of the ball early in the game. However, Morocco quickly found its rhythm, creating several dangerous opportunities through players like Hakimi and El Khannouss. Despite these chances, the first half remained scoreless, with Morocco arguably having the better overall chances.
In the second half, Morocco continued to press for the lead but was repeatedly frustrated by the Dutch defense and goalkeeper Verbruggen. Meanwhile, the Netherlands managed to capitalize on one of their few opportunities in the 72nd minute, with Cody Gakpo scoring to put them ahead. Although this goal seemed like enough, Issa Diop managed to equalize during added time. Both teams largely negated each other during extra time, meaning the decisive result had to be determined by penalties. The North African team demonstrated greater composure during the shootout, despite both teams missing several spot-kicks. Ismael Saibari scored the winning penalty.
The Moroccans are set to face co-host Canada on Saturday at 7 PM in Houston during the Round of 16.
