Egypt advanced to the Round of 16 of the World Cup after defeating Australia 4:2 in the penalty shootout. The match ended 1-1 after both regulation and extra time.
Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour scored a header after receiving a free kick through multiple passes. Australia managed to equalize in the 55th minute through a self-goal by Mohamed Hany, who directed a free kick from O’Neill into his own net.
In the first half, Egypt demonstrated a stronger performance and secured a deserved lead. Although the Australians nearly scored early on with a shot hitting the post by Volpato, they struggled to create dangerous attacks. Egypt capitalized on their opportunities, leading through Ashour’s goal.
After the break, Australia increased the pressure and drew level with the unfortunate Hany own goal. Both teams pushed hard for the winning goal afterward, but the score remained level at 1-1 until the end of regulation play. Australia had chances through Metcalfe and Irankunda, while Marmoush put Egypt in a dangerous position.
Nothing significant happened during extra time. However, in the penalty shootout, the Egyptians showed better composure, successfully converting all their kicks.
Consequently, the North African team will face the winner of the Argentina vs. Cabo Verde match in the Round of 16 next Tuesday at 18:00 Central European Time in Atlanta.
