AfD Swaps Chief Treasurer in Dramatic Internal Vote; Hannes Gnauck Replaces Carsten Hütter

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has surprisingly replaced its Federal Treasurer. At the federal party convention in Erfurt, Bundestag member Hannes Gnauck successfully prevailed in a competitive vote against the long-serving incumbent, Carsten Hütter.

The election required three separate rounds, as both candidates failed to secure an absolute majority (over 50%) in the first two ballots. Initially, Hütter led with 49.6 percent, while Gnauck followed with 46.0 percent. In the second round, both candidates reached just over 48 percent, with Gnauck increasing his lead by a single vote. Finally, in the third and decisive round, Gnauck achieved 51.0 percent, securing the position.

Hütter had held the role of the AfD’s Federal Treasurer since 2020. Gnauck, his successor, was previously active, among other roles, as the federal chairman of the now-dissolved Youth Alternative (JA).
