CSU Chief Söder Backs Ilse Aigner as Strong Candidate for Federal Presidency

Markus Söder, the leader of the CSU, sees Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament (also a CSU member), as a potentially strong candidate for the office of Federal President. Speaking to Spiegel, Söder stated that Aigner demonstrates high levels of approachability, humanity, and empathy-qualities he deems absolutely necessary for a Federal President in the current era. Additionally, he stressed the importance of Aigner having acceptance from both the CDU and the SPD. Regarding a possible candidacy, Söder expressed his full support, saying, “If Ilse Aigner wishes, she has my complete sympathy and support.” The decision on candidates will be made jointly by the governing coalition this autumn.

Turning to criticism of his leadership style following the Bavarian local elections in the spring, Söder explained that the issue has been discussed and clarified within the party’s bodies. He expressed understanding for any uncertainty that might arise after a local election, especially in areas where the party did not win. He emphasized that the party is unified in how it is processing these events. According to him, the guiding principle for the CSU remains: “Conflict weakens, unity strengthens. Ultimately, it is about shared success, and nothing else.”
