The DAX showed no clear direction on Friday after a sluggish start to trading. By about 12:30 PM, the leading index was calculated at approximately 25,130 points, registering a slight gain of 0.1 percent over the previous day’s closing level.
Market movement was characterized by a defensive posture among Frankfurt investors, who concentrated their focus on the telecommunications and pharmaceutical sectors, according to Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets. This cautious approach was influenced by company developments at Vodafone and Bayer. For instance, the German telecommunications provider’s stock was listed near the index peak today, due to an upcoming change in a major shareholder that is stimulating new consolidation ideas in the European telecom industry.
In other areas, Merck, Fresenius, and Fresenius Medical Care saw increased interest, particularly after takeover speculation briefly surrounded Qiagen’s stock yesterday. Lipkow noted that such rumors and speculation are typical features of an otherwise quiet summer trading period.
Overall, trading in the DAX remained confined to narrow ranges and was accompanied by below-average trading volume. Lipkow further stated that persistent increases in energy prices are fueling inflation fears and prematurely dampening potential price recoveries.
Globally, the Euro strengthened slightly on Friday afternoon, reaching 1.1432 US dollars. Correspondingly, the US dollar purchased for 0.8747 Euros. Commodity prices showed mixed results. The price of fine ounces of gold dipped, reaching $4,109 US dollars in the afternoon (-0.3 percent), which equates to 115.55 Euros per gram. Meanwhile, the crude oil price saw a minor decrease; the Brent North Sea barrel cost $76.21 US dollars around noon German time on Friday, representing a shortfall of 9 cents or 0.1 percent compared to the previous day’s close.
On the stock listing itself, Heidelberg Materials, Deutsche Telekom, and Fresenius were among the strongest performers, while Infineon, Rheinmetall, and Bayer occupied the lower end of the performance list.
