CDU Endorses Stefan Evers as Berlin Spitzenkandidat for Upcoming State Elections

The CDU regional chairmen’s meeting proposed Stefan Evers as the top candidate for the Berlin State House election on September 20th. The party announced on Friday evening that he should also become the provisional state chairman of the CDU Berlin. The state executive board is expected to meet on this matter “shortly.” Evers has been a Finance Senator since April 2023 and, starting this April, has additionally served as a Culture Senator.

Earlier that afternoon, Berlin’s incumbent Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), announced that he would no longer be available as a leading candidate. This decision was triggered by the ongoing month-long debate regarding Wegner’s crisis management following the arson attack on the Berlin power grid on January 3rd. He was criticized both for reacting too slowly and for having allegedly misrepresented the facts concerning the incident.
