Drought Concerns Drive German Districts to Seek Restrictions on Pool Use

Due to increasing water scarcity, local districts (Landkreise) across Germany are finding it necessary to impose restrictions in leisure activities. Achim Brötel, the President of the German District Day (DLT), stated this in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. He noted that various regions are currently experiencing more intense periods of heat and drought. Brötel further mentioned that private consumption, such as pools, may need to be re-evaluated. Local water suppliers will provide specific recommendations that the public should adhere to. Although there have been past instances where individual municipalities initiated limits on both the times and the volumes of water extraction, Brötel emphasized that this is not the preference of any district or community. “Naturally, we first rely on the common sense of the people,” he said.
