Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna sharply criticized the negotiation attempts initiated by US President Donald Trump with Russia, stating that the discussions had “effectively failed.” Speaking to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, he added that Vladimir Putin primarily wasted Trump’s time. Tsahkna noted that warnings about the potential failure of these talks had been issued from the start. Furthermore, while negotiations were supposedly underway, Russia continued to increase pressure on Ukraine, a fact made clear by the intensity of attacks seen in recent weeks.
Regarding the threat of a full-scale Russian attack on Poland and the Baltic states, the Foreign Minister firmly dismissed the concerns, stating that such a large-scale invasion in the coming weeks is unlikely due to Russia’s lack of forces. He pointed out that there are no relevant troop movements, as Russia remains tied down in Ukraine. However, Tsahkna cautioned that this does not mean Russia poses no danger; he emphasized, “Russia remains a dangerous country, and provocations are possible at any time,” adding that Estonia is prepared for such events. This assessment follows earlier warnings, including those from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who had alerted the public to intelligence warnings regarding a Russian attack on Poland in critical upcoming months.
