Bernd Fitzenberger, the head of the Institute for Employment Market and Vocational Research (IAB), has warned against the complete abolition of minijobs. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Fitzenberger stated that while he supports restrictions, he opposes the total removal of minijobs for most demographic groups.
He specifically proposed setting a small-scale threshold (“Bagatellgrenze”) of 250 euros per month. Minijobs earning less than this amount should continue to operate under the existing social security regulations. Fitzenberger explained that a primary reason for his suggestion is the concern that a complete elimination would lead to an increase in undeclared work.
This warning comes as the Pension Commission has suggested removing the special tax and social security status of minijobs (with the exception of students), a recommendation that the federal government intends to implement.
