Sven Schulze, the Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt and a member of the CDU, sharply rejected the allegations made by the AfD regarding mail-in voting, warning instead that such claims pose a threat of destabilization to the state. During an interview with RTL and ntv on Friday, Schulze stressed that postal voting is “truly extremely secure,” asserting that it is “just as safe as going to the ballot box.”
The CDU politician criticized the AfD for suggesting manipulation, pointing out that over 350,000 people in Saxony-Anhalt have already chosen to vote by mail. He deemed it “very interesting on the part of the AfD” to now suggest these votes are compromised.
Addressing statements made by AfD top candidate Ulrich Siegmund, Schulze remarked: “Someone who wants to become Minister President and should trust our institutions is now saying: There is cheating happening.” Schulze interpreted Siegmund’s reliance on “a hunch” as a profound lack of trust in the system.
The Minister President countered these concerns, explaining that thousands of people were involved in the counting process and that countless officials worked meticulously to ensure the entire process was free from fraud. “It is not fraud,” he maintained. Schulze concluded that the very act of this debate reveals the AfD’s agenda: “To destabilize this state and to confuse the people here.”
