Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer has issued a stern warning that an Alternative for Germany (AfD) government could abolish Christian holidays, such as Christmas. Speaking to Stern, he noted that a motion was put forward at an AfD party conference advocating for the elimination of Christian holidays in favor of introducing Germanic festivals, such as the Winter Solstice and Yuletide. He described this move as a “huge intrusion into our cultural self-perception,” declaring his firm allegiance to “Team Christmas.”
According to Weimer, this proposal, though eventually rejected at the conference, reflects an ambition to redefine the nation along ideological, ethnic lines. Regardless of one’s stance on Christian faith, he argues that the underlying “Christian-Jewish origin” has profoundly shaped everything known to culture, meaning any frontal attack on this heritage must be seen as a truly revolutionary intent. He stressed, “You don’t really want to go back to the “Völkisches”-to a Germanic construct.” He added that the Christmas debate effectively culminates this issue.
Weimer further cautioned against the AfD’s plans to implement a specific patriotic cultural policy, labeling it “neonationalism”-essentially, outdated “driftwood from the 19th century” and pure nationalism. He claims the party intends to close down everything from Bauhaus buildings to activities closely tied to churches. He believes the political center must address the AfD’s anti-church reflex more forcefully. Ultimately, he poses a simple question to voters: “Do you really want Yuletide, or can you still manage with Christmas?” His concluding advice is clear: “If you are on Team Christmas, then do not vote for them.”
