Roland Koch, the former Minister-President of Hesse and confidant of Merz, has cautioned his party regarding the potential for a minority government in Sachsen-Anhalt following the state election. Speaking to the news magazine Focus, he stated that such a scenario could serve as a “honey trail to the AfD.” He added that, as a strategy for the CDU, a minority government represented “no interesting prospect.”
Koch specifically warned against the potential for a state becoming ungovernable if ruled by a minority cabinet. According to the former minister-president, the focus often shifts during discussions about a minority government in Sachsen-Anhalt to whether the Minister-President will be elected. However, he stressed that the real question must be where a majority for the budget could be found and what compromises would be necessary to secure it.
Concurrently, Koch warned the Social Democrats not to question already decided-upon reforms. “If the Social Democrats allow the AfD to run their charade now, they will gain nothing from it,” Koch asserted. He argued that if the Social Democrats chose to drop the reforms as a consequence of the political deadlock, they would put the CDU itself in a crisis of identity.
