Bundestag Vice President Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke) has called for a popular referendum concerning Germany’s national anthem and state flag. The demand was prompted by the fact that the AfD sang the former GDR national anthem during one of their events.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition), Ramelow noted that he has previously criticized the AfD for the political distortion and appropriation of various historical symbols. Because of these issues, he has proposed holding a vote on the anthem and on the black-red-gold tricolor as the national flag. He argued that this would finally help fulfill Article 146 of the Basic Law.
Article 146 stipulates that the Basic Law loses its validity on the day a new constitution enters into force that has been decided upon by the free will of the German people. Ramelow stated that through a referendum, it would be possible “to powerfully counter reinterpretations and appropriations.” He added: “It is not gentlemen like Steimle or Chrupalla who decide what is sung, but the sovereign decides through a popular vote. Then no one can use an alleged silent majority.”
Ramelow had previously advocated for a vote on the black-red-gold colors and the national anthem as early as 2025.
