Ex-CSU Leader Supports Debate on Term Limits for Bayern’s Minister-President

Former CSU leader Erwin Huber has shown openness to the Bavarian ÖDP’s push for limiting the term of state chancellors. According to Huber, who told Stern, the initiative reactivates a draft law from the Bavarian state government dating back to 2018. He described the renewed discussion as “an interesting debate that is now resuming.”

Huber noted that the original proposal had focused on establishing permanent structures within the Bavarian constitution, independent of any single individual. He hopes that the current discussion will remain centered on these principles rather than devolving into a personal political dispute.

The ÖDP has announced plans to launch a corresponding popular initiative this week. The aim is to embed in the constitution, via a popular vote, a rule stating that the Ministerpräsident may hold office for a maximum of two election terms. The smaller party has a track record of successfully organizing several popular initiatives. This proposed plan has, however, generated criticism within the CSU leadership, particularly from Ministerpräsident Markus Söder.
