Given the poor performance of the currently governing CDU in Saxony-Anhalt, CDU Chairman Michael Kretschmer is calling for the search for solutions that transcend party boundaries. Speaking to the “Leipziger Volkszeitung” and the “Sächsische Zeitung” on Monday, Kretschmer stated that the Union cannot achieve the necessary change in Germany by itself.
Kretschmer stressed that a broad social consensus, independent of party lines, is required. He argued that action is more important than merely having a position, noting that the populace expects solutions across key issues such as migration, security, energy prices, the economy, and job creation-along with a government that functions properly.
The local CDU suffered a significant downturn in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, with its result plummeting by more than half compared to five years ago, despite being the strongest force previously. Kretschmer described the performance of his Christian Democrats in the neighboring state as “disastrous.” His conclusion was that the most critical next step is to take the correct consequences and put an end to the status quo.
