The Left Party has sharply criticized the way Families Minister Karin Prien (CDU) is handling the “Demokratie leben” (Living Democracy) funding program. Maik Brückner, the queer representative for The Left, told the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition) that Prien’s current focus is effectively damaging the standard funding for democracy promotion and social cohesion. He demanded that projects under the “Demokratie leben” framework-especially those addressing discrimination, queer hostility, and anti-democratic extremism-must instead be permanently secured and expanded. Brückner stated that reducing the program’s funding by five million euros for deradicalization programs, especially at the expense of progressive projects, would be the wrong approach.
