At least 15 people were killed and 22 others were injured in a suicide bombing attack carried out outside a police station in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan on Sunday.
Local authorities reported that the perpetrator attempted to enter the police station but was stopped by serving officers. Subsequently, the attacker detonated explosives at the station’s gate. At the time of the attack, a crowd of people was gathered nearby for a protest demonstration.
The seriously injured were transported to a hospital in the nearby city of Saidu Sharif. Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
The demonstrators had assembled to protest the renewed wave of violence in the Swat Valley-an area that was once a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban before a military offensive pushed the group out in 2009. This act intensifies the already strained security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region where the TTP has been insurgency for many years, following several other fatal attacks in the area recently.
