In anticipation of the special meeting of EU Interior Ministers regarding the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Left Party leader Luigi Pantisano called on European nations to show solidarity with Spain.
Addressing the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday edition), Pantisano described “the attacks within the EU against Spain” as irresponsible. He urged EU Interior Ministers and European heads of state to find a constructive path forward instead of aligning themselves with Meloni and the far-right, as the Chancellor has done. Pantisano stated that the EU must collectively address the causes of migration because this is far more important and effective than continuously raising border defenses.
According to the Left Party chief, achieving this requires several steps. First, “violent conflicts in the world must be ended,” he explained, since these conflicts force people into fleeing. Second, Pantisano pointed to the climate catastrophe, which renders areas across the African continent uninhabitable, forcing people to move north in order to survive. Furthermore, he argued that there needs to be a border policy that prevents people from dying in the Mediterranean.
