Berlin – The German government has responded cautiously to recent remarks by Jens Spahn, parliamentary group leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), regarding a potential German nuclear deterrent.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, addressing reporters in Berlin on Monday, reiterated the government’s consistent position on nuclear security. “The German government has consistently emphasized the importance of nuclear protection” Kornelius stated. He confirmed that this stance is integral to the foundational agreements within the governing coalition. “Currently, this protection is guaranteed by NATO.
Kornelius also referenced Chancellor Scholz’s previous comments concerning France’s offer to initiate discussions on nuclear cooperation. “Beyond that, there is no further development” he clarified. He characterized Spahn’s statements as standing alone and added that the government has no plans to acquire nuclear weapons.
“The focus remains on the European security umbrella and its availability; however, these are purely hypothetical discussions” Kornelius concluded, underlining the government’s commitment to existing security structures.
