Security Alert: Drone with potential explosive device found at Leipzig/Halle Airport

The Federal Ministry of the Interior has officially confirmed the discovery of a drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to a spokesperson speaking to the dts news agency on Wednesday, no further details can be released due to ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence stated that it is not involved in the probe, calling it “purely a matter for the Federal Police.”

The Ministry of Transport acknowledged being “fully aware of the danger to air traffic caused by unmanned aerial systems.” It explained that its role is to maintain the safety of flight operations, which occasionally requires temporarily halting services. This precautionary measure was reportedly implemented around 1:55 AM on Wednesday for approximately two hours. The north runway has since reopened, while the south runway remains closed.

Prior to the discovery, a drone had been sighted near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. Sources within security circles indicate that the drone was outfitted with explosives and a detonator.
