The defense industry is reporting that the implementation of the federal government’s multi-billion dollar investments in national defense is being hindered by bureaucratic sluggishness. According to an internal paper released by key defense industry associations, the main bottleneck lies in the protracted security vetting processes for personnel.
The joint paper by the aerospace association BDLI and the arms industry association BDSV notes that highly specialized professionals are still undergoing review processes that can take several months, often involving multiple investigations by different authorities. The paper identifies corporate security protection as a “neuralgic point” in the acceleration of the defense sector.
The associations are urgently calling for systemic improvements. The industry paper concludes that its crucial ability to rapidly develop new technologies, integrate them, and subsequently translate them into military capabilities is being severely restricted at a critical juncture.
While the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs oversees the security protection of companies-a measure designed to ensure that only thoroughly vetted employees access confidential information-reports indicate that the associated inquiries by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and other agencies currently average approximately eight months.
