In the trial concerning the fatal car attack on a demonstration in Munich in February 2025, the defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Higher Regional Court of Munich also determined that there was an exceptional degree of culpability, according to the verdict announced on Thursday. This ruling largely followed the request put forth by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (Staatsanwaltschaft). The defense had argued for a 15-year prison sentence and placement in a psychiatric hospital.
The incident occurred on February 13, 2025, when the 25-year-old Afghan man deliberately drove his car into a Verdi event in central Munich. The attack resulted in the deaths of a mother and her two-year-old daughter, while 44 other individuals sustained injuries ranging from serious to life-threatening. Investigators believe the perpetrator acted for religious reasons. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office had charged the man with two counts of murder, 22 counts of attempted murder, and 22 counts of bodily harm.
